Aim:
To consolidate and extend the fundamental physics of first level units and develop concepts and techniques in applied physics.

The major topics of the unit are Electromagnetism, Acoustics, Solid State Physics and Polymer Physics. Electromagnetism includes electric and magnetic fields, Maxwell's equation and electromagnetic waves while Acoustics includes sound-pressure waves. Solid State Physics includes quantum statistics and application, energy bands, structures and properties of solids while the Polymer Physics section includes chemical and physical structures, electrical properties, thermal processes and conducting polymers.

Assessment includes tests and assignments (70%) and laboratory work (30%).

Prerequisite(s): GAS1384.
